UFC star takes another swipe at 'spineless' LeBron

UFC star Colby Covington has taken another swipe at NBA legend LeBron James after calling out the Lakers star after his victory over Tyron Woodley on Sunday (AEST).

Covington, known for his conservative views and his support of Donald Trump, took aim at James and "woke athletes" following his dominant win over arch enemy Woodley.

The welterweight fighter actually got a call from Donald Trump during his post-fight presser after taking aim at James and expressing support for police and army personnel during a turbulent time in the United States in the lead up to the November election.

"I want to dedicate this fight to all the first responders, all the military out there," he said after cutting off announcer Jon Anik.

"This world would not be safe without you guys, you keep us safe, and not these woke athletes. I'm sick of these spineless cowards like LeBron James."

In recent years, James has been perhaps the most politically active athlete in the US alongside blackballed NFL star Colin Kaepernick, with both men taking a stand on racial and social issues.

The NBA star didn't look too happy when asked about his critics after his side's close game 2 win over the Nuggets. And he responded in typical LeBron fashion.

In continuing his attack on James on Tuesday, Covington took it another notch below the belt.

The controversial star cited a rumor that first developed in 2010, toward the end of James' first stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The purported claim was that former teammate Delonte West was involved in a relationship with James' mother, which caused an alleged rift between the two players at the time.

West has tragically descended into a life of addiction and homelessness after his career in the NBA.

The NBA fraternity has come out in staunch defence of James, with rival and friend Kevin Durant mocking Covington by asking if he was a "relevant" enough to be calling out LeBron.

Houston star Austin Rivers also responded while Bulls star Michael Carter-Williams posted, "Weird no one tells him to stick to fighting…" in reference to Fox News commentator Laura Ingraham's comments stating James should "shut up and dribble" rather than speak up on political and social issues.

It's not the first time Covington has lashed out at NBA players.

In late August he said the game's stars are "players of a kids' game" following the NBA's temporary suspension following the Bucks' protest against the Jacob Blake shootings.
