T20 World Cup in Australia postponed to 2022

The 2020 Men's Twenty20 World Cup to be held in Australia has been postponed to 2022.

Originally scheduled to take place from October-November this year, it was moved to the same time in 2022, the ICC confirmed.

The final will be played on Sunday 13 November 2022.

The move means that the 2021 Men's T20 World Cup in India will go ahead as scheduled in the "agreed window from 17 October to 14 November 2021".

"Fans who had purchased tickets to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia will be refunded in full, while revised fixtures and venues for the event in 2022 will be announced in due course," tournament organisers said in a statement.

"All teams who qualified for Australia 2020 will gain entry into the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in India. "

The Women's Cricket World Cup in February in New Zealand has also been postponed for a year to February-March 2022.

"There has been no women's international cricket played since the conclusion of the Women's T20 World Cup (in March) and due to the varying impact of COVID-19 globally that is likely to remain the situation for a number of the teams," ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney said in a statement.

"Moving the event by 12 months gives all competing teams the chance to play a sufficient level of cricket ahead of both the qualification event and leading into a Cricket World Cup so the integrity of the tournament is maintained."

Australian players celebrate their win at the T20 World Cup.

Cricket Australia Interim CEO, Nick Hockley, said the decision to move the Men's T20 World Cup has a silver lining, allowing the issues of the pandemic to hopefully improve by then and allow more fans to attend than if the event took place this year.

"It has been a challenging time for everyone," Hockley said in a statement.

"This decision gives Australia something to look forward to in 2022. It also gives us a good chance of safely welcoming fans into the outstanding venues across the country to enjoy watching the world's best cricketers compete in this major global event.

"We would like to thank our government partners and venues for their continued support and we are working closely with them to retain the same host city and venue footprint established for the 2020 tournament, to the fullest extent possible."

There will be a new qualifying process for the 2022 T20 World Cup as well.
